What is JRA?

I went over what JRA is on my first post here.

Here are some basics:

JRA or Juvenile Rheumatoid Arthritis is a type of arthritis that causes inflammation in the joints for more than six weeks in a child under 16 years old. JRA is an auto immune disorder which means the body mistakes its own cells as a threat (something foreign) and the body attacks. This results in swelling, pain, and redness. JRA is also now known as juvenile idiopathic arthritis or JIA.

A flare up is when an arthritic episode occurs.

There are multiple kinds of JRA. The kind that will be talked most about on here is poly-articular. This means five or more joints are affected. They are usually the large joints like knees, hips, ankles, etc.

The pain scale is a rating on zero to ten of how bad the pain you have is. Zero is no pain. Ten is the worst pain you've ever felt in your life.

The type of treatments talked about most are biologics, NSAIDs, and steroids.

A biologic is a type of drug targeted to either suppress the immune system, block certain parts of the body, or modify another drug. I have taken many and there are many different types of biologics. See here for more information on all sorts of treatments.

A NSAID is something like advil. It is used to reduce swelling and help pain.

A steroid is typically used to control the symptom and not the cause. Typically not used for long term.
